Torrid Blue Devils Sweep Indy; Host Independence Wednesday

If you love lots of offense, you’d love being in the Kansas City Kansas Community College Field House Monday night.

Draining 14 three-pointers, the Blue Devil men raced to a 96-70 win over Allen County after the Lady Blue Devils had posted a 76-62 triumph.

The wins boosted both teams to 2-3 in the Jayhawk Conference heading into a Wednesday night showdown with Independence in the Field House (women at 5 p.m., men at 7 p.m.). The twin bill wraps up an extended homestand for the Blue Devils, who play seven of their next Jayhawk Conference double headers on the road starting at Johnson County Saturday afternoon (2 and 4 p.m.)

KCKCC used torrid shooting to snap a two-game losing streak in the men’s game. Netting 19 of 30 second half shots for 63.3 percent, the Blue Devils finished with 55.4 percent for the game including 14 of 30 three-pointers (.467).

Derick Denny, the Jayhawk leader in three-pointers, had a season high 9 of 15 in a 29-point performance while Scott Fruehling added 4 of 9 from three in a 16-point outburst as the Blue Devils outscored the Red Devils 14-10 in treys.

The Blue Devils also got big inside performances from Dennis Tinnon, who had 15 points and a game high 13 rebounds, and Andre Metoyer, who had six points and 11 rebounds as KCKCC dominated the rebounding 46-28. Fruehling also added seven assists and five rebounds while Melvin Gatson had nine points and five assists as KCKCC improved its overall mark to 14-3.

Alyssa Rushton’s 24 points which included four three-pointers powered the KCKCC women to their 11th win in 16 starts. Anna Belousova added 12 points and Laci Schreiber, Shannon Carlin, Jerae David and Ashley Wham seven each. Coming off a lengthy injury, Melanie Phipps had nine rebounds, Schreiber eight and Rushton six. Schreiber also had a career high five assists.

Defensively, the Blue Devil defense forced 25 turnovers with Rushton accounting for five steals and Carlin and Phipps three each.
